1) The frickin ice will add a Late to my name

The old adage about Thai ice getting into your spine and knocking you out is not true anymore. So many tourists have made it obvious by specifically asking the barmaids not to drop any cubes into their drinks that there has been a conscious effort by the restaurant managers to themselves look into the quality aspects of the places they procure their ice from. The traditional pukish practice of sourcing them from fish markets and rusty street production units has long disappeared. The best ice is the one which has a see through circular hole in the middle of the cube and if your jug has these floating on top, rest assured you are in safe hands.

2) I am a male, I am out their alone: I AM HERE FOR SEX

Not true at all. In fact, there are so many enlightened male travelers in search of true Budhist enlightenment in the city and the three jewel temples of Wat Pho, Wat Arun and Wat Phra Kaeo which stand as the biggest symbolics of Budhism in Thailand are what attract these guys in droves. The intensity and focus of these guys is palpable from a distance. One look and you will make out that sex is the last thing on their minds. So the next time, you want to pass on that smile and a wink, make sure you cross check whats their agenda.

3) They are all cheats

First things first: Every tourist destination has scammers, cheaters and money mongers running around. This is an inevitable phenomenon which is universal. Rather than cribbing about it, we as tourists need to make sure that we well prepared in advance and all those things which make us see red (read: Tuk Tuk drivers cheating your pockets out of their living daylights). There are hosts of things you can scout on review sites like Tripadvisor and understand the common scamming practices. Other than that, once you move out of the main Bangkok hinterland, you come across angelic souls who are ready to give an arm and a leg to help you. Back yourself with some knowledge beforehand and stop fretting even before you have boarded one of the many flights to Bangkok.

4) I can buy Bangkok in my years savings

That was in 1990. This is 2012. Prices have hit the roof and most of the blame goes to us folks who have gone there and shouted about the beauty of this place from rooftops to other friends who probably did the same when they came back. Due to the screaming popularity of this place both for reasons good and bad, Bangkok now knows that it pulls people to itself without much effort and locals are lapping up all the attention they are getting. Restaurants are getting expensive by 20% every year and hotels have ramped up the tariff by a factor of 5 since the past 2 years or so. The only thing cheap are the number of cheap flights to Bangkok available from every major world destination.
