Placed in the Indian Ocean, the Andaman Nicobar Islands are a group of islands which are separated from Thailand and Burma by the Andaman Sea. A union territory of India, the Andaman and Nicobar consists of two island groups called the Andaman Islands and the Nicobar Islands. Archeological excavations and studies have revealed that the place was inhabited even as early as 2200 years ago. Some of the evidences also indicate that the islands were inhabited during the Middle Paleolithic period. The original inhabitants of Andaman and Nicobar are the indigenous tribes like the Great Andamanese, the Jarawa, the Jangil the Onge and the Sentinelese. Of these, the Sentinelese is the most isolated of all the groups and their interaction with the modern world and lifestyle is very limited or close to non existence even today.

With the influx of settlers in the Andaman Nicobar Islands, the total population of these indigenous tribes has decreased drastically. Many of them are on the brink of extinction. In fact, the Jangil and majority of the Great Andamanese group are already extinct. Only an approximate population of 450 is remaining in the present times. Of the indigenous tribes of the Nicobars, the Nicobarese, or Nicobari and the Shompen, the Nicobari can be found all over the island group, while the Shompen are more or less concentrated along the hinterland of Great Nicobar.
