Geography Antigua, the larger of the two main islands located 295 miles (420 km) south-southeast of San Juan, P.R., is low-lying except for a range of hills in the south that rise to their highest point at Bogey Peak (1,330 ft.; 405 m). Well-wooded Antigua is 108 sq. miles (280 sq. km); the island dependencies of Redonda (an uninhabited rocky islet) and Barbuda (a coral island formerly known as Dulcina) are 0.5 sq. miles (1.30 sq. km) and 62 sq. miles (161 sq. km), respectively.
Government
Parliamentary democracy.
History Antigua was explored by Christopher Columbus in 1493 and named for the Church of Santa Maria de Ia Antigua in Seville. Antigua was colonized by Britain in 1632; Barbuda was first colonized in 1678. The country joined the West Indies Federation in 1958. With the breakup of the federation, it became one of the West Indies Associated States in 1967, self-governing its internal affairs. Full independence was granted Nov. 1, 1981.
The Bird family has controlled the islands since Vere C. Bird founded the Antigua Labor Party in the mid-1940s. Bird, the former prime minister, and his sons, one of whom is the current prime minister, have a history of corruption that includes money laundering, arms sales, drug trafficking, and extortion. In recent yeas the Russian Mafia has gained a foothold on the island. The U.K. and the U.S. have increased their pressure on Antigua to halt its illegal activities—the U.S. State Department bluntly called the island “one of the most attractive centers in the Caribbean for money launderers.”
