Population: no permanent residents

The British Antarctic Territory consists of the South Shettand Islands, South Orkney Islands, and nearby Graham Land on the Antarctic continent, largely uninhabited. They are dependencies of the British Crown colony of the Falkland Islands but received a separate administration in 1962, being governed by a British-appointed high commissioner who is governor of the Falklands.

Administrative headquarters: Victoria, Seychelles

Area: 85 sq. red. (220 sq. km)

This dependency, consisting of the Chagos Archi pelago and other small island groups, was formed in 1965 by agreement with Mauritius and the Seychelles. There is no permanent civilian population in the territory. One of its islands, Diego Garcia (17 sq. mi), is a joint U.S-U.K. refueling and support station that was used during the Persian Gulf War (1991).
