Fans have long endured a love hate relationship with a team that’s failed to deliver on many occasions, and after being dumped out of the World Cup after a string of hopeless performances, many supporters have decided to give the game the red card.
Instead fans are turning to cricket, with England currently thriving after hammering Australia in the latest one day series, having already regained the Ashes last year.
It’s thought fans are keen to watch a sport where scandal and simulation isn’t commonplace and integrity and passion are displayed in equal measure.
Public opinion of England’s footballers couldn’t be lower with the sums of money the players are paid making it difficult for the average fan to relate, particularly when their millionaire heroes turn in abysmal performances only to walk away many thousands of pounds richer.
A recent poll carried out by competitions website PrizeBoom.com found that over two thirds of respondents believe England’s footballers didn’t deserve the hideous sums of money they’re paid. Contrastingly, England’s cricketers were viewed by over half of those surveyed to be earning a fair wage.
Footballers’ salaries have long been an issue of disgust, with top players able to earn more than £150,000 per week. England cricketers can expect to earn up to £450,000 per year, a meagre sum in comparison.
With high profile public misdemeanours common amongst football’s elite it came as no surprise that more than 80% of respondents felt the cricket team made better role models than their football equals.
Farnaz Khan, founder of PrizeBoom.com, said she sympathised with those planning to call time on their football watching careers.
She said: “Football is this country’s passion but when players are earning obscene sums of money to turn in abject performances and let their country down, it’s a bitter pill to swallow.
“Fans have spent thousands of pounds to follow the team in South Africa which I’m sure they now feel was money wasted. During the same period the squad will have earned huge sums of money, it’s disgusting.
“In sharp contrast our cricket team are flourishing and are amongst the best in the world, something the whole country can be proud of.
“I can fully understand why people are sick of the beautiful game and I can’t think of anything nicer than a day at the cricket watching real men compete.”
