Hard Disk Data Recovery Makes Michael Scofield Less Clever In Prison Break

Scenario from Prison Break, Season 2:

"So this is where Scofield lived?" agent Mahone asked.
"Up until about two months ago when he was incarcerated" one FBI answered.
"Mother's dead, father's a deadbeat. You got nothing in the whole world but your brother. So you plan for months until you got right, every single element. And then you destroy all the evidence." Whispered Mahone.

 

With Agent Alexander Mahone wandering in the house where Michael Scofield lived, every single detail Michael planed to break his brother out of prison appeared in Mahone's mind. And he felt by instinct there might be something in the river right front of the house.

 

Without doubt Michael is an architecture engineer genius. But hard disk data recovery makes him less clever.

 

I am always assuming if Michael is a computer engineer rather than building engineer, would he suffer so many upsets and troubles? Probably not! (Just say it. No one is perfect. Even if Michael is then this TV series will be another story. That's also the reason why this drama is so attractive!)

 

With all prison break elements in mind, Michael might delete or even format the hard disk in his computer and segregated it. Then threw it roughly to the river in front of him thinking the evidence is vanished permanently.

 

However he was wrong. FBI got the hard disk slept in the river for so long time. Finally nearly 60% of the data in the hard disk was recovered. Then Michael and his partners were all exposed. Even they succeeded in arriving Panama, agent Mahone still traced their steps. Each time FBI lost contact with the guys from Fox River, this piece of disk would always contribute a piece of clue which made Michael so hard to move forward.

 

Michael didn't expect that though he was clever enough. To some extent he did lose out to Mahone and hard disk data recovery technology, a technology powerful enough to recover data from hard disk no matter deleted, formatted or even suffer some physical damage by lying under water for a long time.

 

Michael may have no knowledge about hard disk data recovery technology, so do many others. Maybe we don't have the experience Michael suffered. However many of us should have underwent situations like deleting, formatting some important files accidently or carelessly from our computer, USB, memory card or stick. As a matter of fact these files are all recoverable because they are still in the disk just not readable or visible and are marked as available for new data to write over. And many professional disk data recovery software are easy to get them back. However better don't save any new files to the disk once you find some significant things lost as general data recovery program are not so good at recovering overwritten data. The only way is by relying on some special data recovery services. For example IBM ever successfully recovered 90% of the data in a hard disk written over for 7 times.

 

So if I were Michael, I would break the hard disk into pieces and discard them to different places. As deleting, formatting or other non-physical damage won't make data in the hard disk erased permanently.
