Putting a finish to the monopoly of the private buses in Kochi, the KSRTC had started its city service on Saturday. Transport Minister flagged off the 50 buses which have been named as Thiru Kochi at a function held in Kochi on July 16. The KSRTC buses will be plying on Aluva-Aroor, Aluva-Fort Kochi, Aluva-Poothotta, Aluva-Chottanikkara, Aluva-Pookkattupady-Thevara, Aluva-Thevara, Aluva-Kumbalam North, Aluva-Eloor, Ernakulam-Kakkanad-Kumbalanghi, Mattanchery-Thuthiyoor, Ernakulam-Cheranellore, Cheranellore-Tripunithura, Ernakulam-Amrita Hospital, Thevara-Kochi Cooperative Medical College, Panangad-Infopark and Willington Island routes. While 32 buses will be operated from the Ernakulam KSRTC depot, 18 buses will be based in the Aluva depot. It was after thinking about the long-standing demand by the Kochiites that the KSRTC decided to start its city services. The people there had been at the receiving finish of the frequent strikes and rude behavior of the private bus workers. The KSRTC tremendous rapid and express services will go through the national bypass without entering the city. But the decision will be implemented only after some time. It is to keep away from the feasible congestion in the city owing to the introduction of the city services that the long-distance services are being diverted through the national bypass. Steel boats will start service between Fort Kochi and Ernakulam soon. On the strike call given by private bus operators the Cabinet would go through the sub-committee document on the issues raised by the bus owners. The experts committee comprising a retired judge, transport specialist, economist and the Transport Secretary will look in to the issues, including bus fare revision.
