Rotating molding is a unique plastic mold process that is ideally suited to production of hollow parts. The seamless plastic parts can be as small as a doll's eye or as large as a 21000-gallon storage tank. Complex geometries, which cannot be produced by other hollow-part processes, are routinely being made as one-piece parts by rotational molding.

Compared with other processes for producing hollow parts, the initial financial investment in molds and machine that are required for rotational molding is low. As a result of such advantages, the rotational molding industry has had impressive growth rates. Both for a number of complex reasons, the industry has not yet realized its full potential.

The process is based on the heating and cooling of a biaxial rotating mold that defines the shape of the required part. The most common type of processing equipment is the multi-arm turret machine. The basic parts the machine are the oven, a separate cooling chamber, and a turret for moving the arms and molds trough the process. Turrets are equipped with one to five arms, which can be straight or offset. Straight arms are used for the running of a multiplicity of small molds; offset arms are normally used to accommodate the largest possible single mold within the confines of the oven and cooling chamber.

A pre-measured amount of plastic material is placed in cavity, which is mounted on a turret arm capable of biaxial rotating the mold. The turret then move the closed, rotating mold into the oven and simultaneously rotate the mold in two directions to uniformly distribute the plastic oven the inside surface of the cavity. The heat of the oven then fuses, or sinters, the plastic material into the shape provided by the cavity. While continuing to rotate, the mold is then moved into the cooling chamber, where the mold and plastic part are cooled.

The turret then moves the plastic mold to the open station, and the finished part is removed. The process can then be repeated. To the casual observer, rotational molding is a simple, low-tech, easy-to-understand process. Nothing could be further from the truth. Anyone who has ever tried to use such equipment to produce an acceptable part is immediately convinced that the process is complex and provides many opportunities failure.
