Dr A T W Simeons has written a book titled 'Pounds and Inches' describing why people are gaining weight and prescribing a new diet called the HCG diet which is a mixture of low calorie food and hormone injections. This diet is aimed at overweight people reducing at least one pound a day without any discomforting side effects.

He clearly states that his method has to be strictly followed as it deals with hormones, so that nothing untoward happens. Also increasing the amount of calorie consumed even by just a hundred leads to disappointing results.
Dr Simeons explains that when a person comes to the doctor for treatment, he takes a general history and when the first signs of overweight were discovered. Then the doctor finds out the maximum weight which the patient has ever recorded and begins the tests and the treatment from there. The doctor has to find out if it is a thyroid problem or if it is a case of overeating or wrong eating, and if the patient has been taking some medicines which may affect the treatment. He says that the average normal body should not be overweight despite what the person eats, if he is healthy. The metabolism should take care of keeping the body fit.

The amount of weight loss needed is calculated and accordingly the dosage of the hormone HCG is prescribed. The loss is approximately 300 to 400 gms for every injection per day. Normally forty injections are prescribed taking into account even the date of the menstrual periods for women. The minimum is twenty six injections, one per day till the ideal weight loss takes place. Care has to be taken to see that the patients continue with the 500 calorie diet for at least three days after the last injection as the tendency of weight gain is more if normal food is eaten.

Patients have a craving for food once the injection course is completed and care has to be taken to control it or else the regain will be alarming. The strict diet is then slackened but the patient is advised to strictly avoid fats and carbs. Dr Simeons says that a maximum of 34 pounds loss is allowed and the course of injections is stopped after this weight loss is reached or the course is over. Only the exceptionally obese people are given more injections and allowed to lose some more weight.
