Once again, hundreds of leading Commonwealth law practitioners will come together the prestigious event of the Commonwealth Lawyers Association, only this time for the first ever Commonwealth regional Law Conference held in West Africa.
On 8-11 April 2010, Nigeria will host the first ever CLA regional conference followed by a 2008 decision to hold regional gatherings in the years in which no Commonwealth Law Conference is scheduled.
Some 1,000 prominent lawyers are expected to attend the regional event, which will be held at the Hilton Hotel in Abuja. Representatives from Nigeria, Ghana, The Gambia, Sierra Leone, Cameroon and other international countries will take part in “A unique program of social and networking events”, as written by president of the CLA, Mohamed Husain, in his welcome letter. He adds that the programme “has been designed to ensure that all those who attend the conference will have an opportunity to meet colleagues from different jurisdictions, exchange experiences and build friendships that will continue long after the closing ceremony”.
As for the specifics of the conference, Husain writes, “The theme of the regional conference is ‘The 21st Century Lawyer: Present Challenges & Future Skills’ and the programme streams will focus on ‘Human Rights & the Rule of Law’ and ‘Corporate & Commercial Law’ with an emphasis on issues of importance within Nigeria and the wider West Africa region. The conference will focus on the provision of practical training and skills development. It will also offer high-profile keynote addresses, an exhibition and a number of satellite meetings hosted by other Commonwealth and legal associations which will take place in the wings of the conference”.
The conference is organized by Paragon, who in October 2008 was appointed as the professional conference organizer of the CLA, an appointment that enables the CLA to select the best conference venues, in addition to retaining control over key areas (such as finance and the programme) and, ultimately, to continue to enhance the reputation and quality of the conference.
