A vacuum sealer is a type of packaging bag that is used to package dried foods, coffee products and other perishable materials that breakdown when exposed to air. This bag removes air before sealing so as to remove oxygen, bar the growth of fungi or bacteria and limit the evaporation of essential components. This makes it an ideal long term package for dried foods like nuts and smoked fish. However, a vacuum sealer can be used to store some fresh foods like meats and vegetables over a short period of time since they bar the growth of bacteria.

Types of vacuum sealers

There are four main types of vacuum sealers that are used for different purposes. They are;

There are two types of kitchen vacuum sealers; the container sealer and the plastic bag vacuum sealer. These two sealers have different uses and preserve food longer than the normal shelf life.

The Container Vacuum Sealer: Resembles the normal storage containers. The only difference is that it a special lid that has a vent top that permits the attachment of a hose. The main purpose of the hose is to suck all the air from the container so as to give it a vacuum seal and preserve food for longer.

The plastic bag sealer: Contains a unique plastic wrap where you place food in. It also contains a countertop sealer that sucks all the air that is between the 2 plastic layers. The plastic bag is then sealed by an internal heat bar to prevent air from getting in.

Industrial vacuum sealers: This is the largest among all the vacuum sealers. It is mainly used in the plant and packing companies to preserve large amounts of goods. The industrial vacuum sealer is automated to do most of the work with minimum supervision. All that is required is to put the goods that need to be vacuum sealed on one side of the machine and by the time they reach the other end, they are all properly vacuum sealed. However, the plastic bags require regular replacing.

Commercial vacuum sealers: This vacuum sealer is mainly used by the companies that require large amounts of sealing that what the kitchen sealer would accommodate. The rolls of the commercial vacuum sealers plastic are usually larger and are sometimes attached to the machine hence, they save packing time and money for the company.

Vacuum sealers are essential for storage of goods as they add to their shelf life, save time and money for the owner. It is therefore advisable to ensure that the vacuum sealer is in good shape at all times by ensuring that it's well maintained. The user should always have a source of compressed air, that is, an air compressor. The air compressor should match with the size of the bag that is used to package the goods. Nonetheless, the vacuum sealers can be programmed to put inerting gases like nitrogen in the packaging bag to limit air exposure. Before buying a vacuum sealer, it is important to do thorough research on the different models to determine one that caters for your needs.
