Job recruiters and human resource officers have their jobs cut out for them. Its not easy to wade through piles and piles of CVs every day, especially in cases where numerous applicants are applying for the same job and they have basically the same qualifications, interests, skills and background. With this in mind, every job applicant should make sure that their CV is well-prepared and would merit more than a passing glance from a recruiter.

It is not a requirement for you to be a designer or an artist to come up with a very good CV. Sometimes the smallest and basic things that are overlooked tend to be the pivotal point of any endeavour. Here are some very simple things to remember when preparing a CV that will surely catch the eye of every discerning recruiter.

The Right Kind and Size of Paper

Now this might not be applicable to those applications that require the CV to be submitted as a soft copy via e-mail. However, in cases where a hard copy is required, be careful with the type of paper you should use to print your CV on. There are various types of papers available today, coming in different colours, texture, and design. Make sure to present the image of professionalism. Avoid papers with flashy colours and floral designs. If you are applying for an office or administrative job in the field of finance or law, go for conservative colours, such as ivory or cream. The field of science and medicine are particular with the image of cleanliness, so the colour white is probably the best option. Keep it simple, and keep it professional.

Just the Right Length

Try to keep it to a maximum of 2 pages, one-sided. Recruiters have to deal with a lot of CVs so they wont have the time to pore over pages and pages of only one CV. Thus, it is important that you present those facts in a way that is scanning-friendly, since that is what they would end up doing anyway. They will only quickly scan through your CV, and if they like what they see as they skim through it, you could definitely get an in for an interview. This is also where you choose the right font size, the right font style, and the appropriate margins that make for readability. Make it easy on the eyes.

Brief and Concise

Do not be long-winded and write a novel. Remember that you are trying to keep it to only one to two pages. Therefore, highlight only the relevant and important bits. Go straight to the point and enumerate your skills, trainings and experiences related to the job. Strike a balance between being informative, and not giving everything away. Provide them with all the much-needed information but leave enough unsaid that they would feel inclined to find out more about you.

Keep these basic considerations in mind when you prepare your first CV.
