When weapons were very simple man could use them without the need for any special apparatus. This is no longer the case today when their speed and complexity make automation essential.
Let us take the example of an aerial attack. Two radars follow simultaneously the movements of the enemy supersonic bomber and of the ground-to-air missile launched against it. The signals picked up by the two radars are fed into an electronic computer which works them out and communicates the details of the missile’s course to a transmitter which is guiding the missile on to the target.
All this takes place simultaneously, within a split second. How could a man calculate at such speed?
