It was believed for a long time that the only valid and acceptable art forms were the classical ones, that is those produced by the western Greco- Latin civilizations. Any other forms of artistic expression were commonly regarded as the work of dabblers of little value. The sole exception was Egyptian art, which attracted universal attention chiefly because of the magnificence and size of its architectural works.

Today, however, many people consider that any form of art has its own intrinsic value and that there can be no question of any preconceived and universally accepted standards for judging the validity of all the varied artistic manifestations. In fact every nation has produced its own special type of art, different from all the others, because the spirit has been different which has animated artists, different also the culture in which they lived and by which they were influenced, and different, in particular, the inspiration which springs from a world always different and irrepeatable.

The truth of this can be seen when we consider that even artists belonging to the same nation, to the same culture and to the same tradition have produced different forms of art during their various periods of history.
