Why Graphs Are Used

Numbers have always been very useful instruments of human progress but sometimes a great deal of ability and analysis is required to interpret them.

To make certain mathematical and geometrical situations comprehensible to ordinary people without the use of numbers, we use graphs. As the world indicates these are drawings which show in diagram form the stages of an operation, the ratios of a quantity and so on. Here are two examples.

If the sales of a business are increasing, the situation will be shown graphically by an oblique sloping line on a background of squares (linear graph).

To give a visual idea of the comparative parts which make up a substance, a circle is drawn divided into segments of different sizes in relation to the amounts they represent (circular graph).
